New York State Conservation Council Convention

Gary Chave, Barb and Butch Wells attended the Annual NYS Conservation Council Convention on Sept. 14th, 15th and 16th.

Gary remains 2nd Vice President and I have become Secretary to the Council.  A lot of work, but it

help me to understand the workings of our Federation, Legislation and workings of Albany better.

Guest speakers were Commissioner ‘Pete’ Grannis, who spoke about the Conservation deficit and how he does not want to burden the sportsmen of New York with higher fees.  He introduced the new Director of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources – Patricia Riexinger who has over 30 years experience with the department itself and hunting experience as well.  She grew up in Rochester and attended Cornell and has been involved with wildlife since she was a young teenager.  He also introduced the new Director of Law Enforcement – Peter Fanelli and his assistant – Walt Heinrich.  Between the both of them they have over 50 years experience.

Grass Roots News:

More club news is wanted.  Any thing to do with Conservation Activities, Fall Shoot, Memorial Shoots, etc.  To send your club news in

Commissioner Grannis spoke at the Convention and is planning on taking his Hunter Safety Class this weekend.  He introduced the new department head of Fish & Wildlife, Patricia Riexinger.  She has been around Fish and Wildlife since she was in high school.  She has been working with DEC for 31 years and hopes to bring her experience and knowledge to good use.

Club insurance is on everyone’s mind these days.  NYS Conservation Council is working with an insurance company that covers all kind of clubs.  Gary Chave will get information and pamphlets for members to take back to their clubs.

Bear sighting are becoming more frequent all over the state.  Remember to use caution out there as hunting season approaches.

DEC Law Enforcement has a new face.  Division Director is Peter Fanelli and Assistant Director is Walt Heinrich.  Between the two of them, they have over 50 years experience.  Captain Tim Duffy, who we have met several times at our banquet, was promoted to Major and is supervising the Southern District.

Seventeen new trainees graduated from the academy.  Another class is hoping to be starting in 2008 as more will be needed as many will be retiring in the next year.
